Finding Linux, Unix Version

The following are command line syntax which works on most machines running unix flavoured and linux distributions :

$ uname -r
[output] 2.6.18-194.32.1.el5.centos.plusxen

$ uname -mrsn
[output] Linux ptm.uthm.edu.my 2.6.18-194.32.1.el5.centos.plusxen i686

$ cat /proc/version
[output] Linux version 2.6.18-194.32.1.el5.centos.plusxen ( This e-mail address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it ) (gcc version 4.1.2 20080704 (Red Hat 4.1.2-48)) #1 SMP Wed Jan 5 20:06:37 EST 2011
